- DON PANCHO (El Cascarrabias): Pelea
adolescentes buscando dónde tomar y darse besos.
[ESCENA ÚNICA]
INT. PANTEÓN ANTIGUO - NOCHE DE
MUERTOS
1. El despertar y el hueso perdido
(Un panteón lúgubre, con
mausoleos grises, cruces chuecas y maleza.
levanta a empujones. Asoma DON PANCHO, furioso).
DON PANCHO
¡Buenas noches, ilustres vecinos!
EVARISTO
(Con asco). Uy, no, General. Levante usted
(Entran corriendo NICO y NINA,
los niños fantasma).
NICO
¡Cuidado, Nina, el General se está desarmando!
NINA
CHICO VIVO
Aquí, mi amor. Aquí nadie nos ve. Atrás de este
mausoleo grandote.
CHICA VIVA
¿No te da miedo? Ay, huele a viejo...
izquierda?
BRITANY
EVARISTO
Cástulo, imagínate, nosotros deambulando en el área
de comida rápida. ¡Qué falta de elegancia! Terminar entre olores a hamburguesa
y papas fritas.
EL RISUEÑO
¡Jajajajaja! ¡Una plaza! ¡Vamos a terminar de
maniquíes en los escaparates! ¡Jajajaja!
DON PANCHO
¡Nos van a echar a un barranco! ¡Lo sabía!
DON CHENTE
¡No! Arriba se apiadaron. Por daños a terceros, se
nos concede a casi todos... ¡El traslado directo al Cielo! ¡Nos vamos al
Paraíso!
TODOS
¡SÍ! ¡ALELUYA! ¡VIVA!
DON CHENTE
indispensable! ¡No me dejen!
(El panteón se sume en una
tristeza profunda. Britany se acerca a Don Chente, decidida).
BRITANY
Oye, Chente, cero cool.
DON PANCHO
Sí, señor. Incluso con estos latosos. Hable con el
patrón, Chente. O todos coludos, o todos rabones.
DON CHENTE
A ver, espérenme. (Don Chente
DON CHENTE
¡Vámonos, muchachos, antes de que se arrepientan!
Nos vamos de este mundo ingrato. ¡Todos! ¡Todos menos las ratas y las arañas!
Y... y yo.
LORENZO
¿Cómo que usted, Don Chente?
DON CHENTE
Pues sí, ¿yo pa' qué me quedo a cuidar cascajo? ¡Yo
[TELÓN / FUNDIDO A NEGRO]
NOTAS SUGERIDAS PARA EL MONTAJE
1.
THE GRAVEYARD REQUIESCAT... IN PACHE
A Comedy
by Benjamin Gavarre
SYNOPSIS: A night of November 1st in an old, dusty Mexican
graveyard, where weeds, cobwebs, and rats rule the land. The skeletal residents
rise from their graves to stretch their bones and await their Day of the Dead
offerings. Amidst 1900s gossip, a mysterious unclaimed bone, living couples
looking for dark corners for their passions, and the news that modernity wants

can save us from eviction.

Claims to be a hero. His bones don't stick together well
anymore.

Twins): Restless,
dramatic ghost children from the Pastry War.

[SINGLE SCENE]
INT. OLD GRAVEYARD - DAY OF THE DEAD NIGHT
1. The Awakening and the Lost Bone
(A gloomy graveyard with grey mausoleums, crooked crosses, and weeds.
The cold wind blows, and the skittering squeak of a rat is heard. LORENZO
emerges from a tomb. He shakes off the dirt and stretches his spine, which
cracks like a ratchet).
LORENZO
Ahhh!
Marvelous. A century underground and this sternum is still intact. Pure bone
density. It already smells like marigold flowers... Let's see if my
great-granddaughter finally brings me my enchiladas potosinas this year!
(Next to him, the neighboring tombstone is pushed up. DON PANCHO peeks
out, furious).
DON PANCHO
Move
over! You're dumping your dirt all over my marble! We've been neighbors for
years, Lorenzo, and you still don't respect property lines. And don't talk to
me about food, it makes me jealous! I bet they bring me the same bland atole as
always.
(THE CHATTERBOX walks in quickly, waving his arms non-stop).
THE CHATTERBOX
Good
evening, illustrious neighbors! Frightfully cold, isn't it? Hey, did you see
the spiders at the entrance? Black widows the size of my fist! I told the night
watchman, "put down some poison," but he never listens, of course. By
the way, Don Pancho, your collarbone is looking terrible, you should take more
calcium.
DON PANCHO
Shut
your mouth, you're making me dizzy!
LORENZO
(Bending
down and picking something off the ground). Hey, wait... I just found this bone lying here.
Look closely. Is it a collarbone?
DON PANCHO
(Leaning
in and squinting his eye sockets). That's no collarbone! That's a femur, a tiny one!
THE CHATTERBOX
Let me
see, let me see, hand it over. (He examines it). No,
man, you guys are blind! This is a hip bone. Look at the curvature of the iliac
crest. Hey... whose is this? Who dropped a piece of their hip?
(The three look at each other. They look at the bone. They look around).
LORENZO
Nobody?
No one is claiming it?
DON PANCHO
Well,
throw it away, it's gross grabbing other people's remains!
(Lorenzo tosses the bone far away. Right at that moment, EVARISTO and
CÁSTULO, impeccable in tuxedos, step out of the French mausoleum walking arm in
arm. The bone flies right past them).
EVARISTO
Good
heavens! Such savages. Throwing remains around like baseballs. Good evening,
illustrious neighbors. Cástulo and I were just about to have some imaginary
herbal tea, care to join us?
CÁSTULO
(Sighing). Oh, Evaristo... these dates make me so nostalgic. I remember Ignacio de la Torre. Such a handsome lad, very gallant. A shame what
happened at that dance.
EVARISTO
A
tragedy, my love. We didn't get caught in the raid that night because we
stepped out to have tea together. But we heard all about what President
Porfirio did. Ah, but what a way to make our grand debut to society. Front page
news! And look at me, a century down here and my love for your shoulder blades
remains intact.
2. War, Kids, and Couples
(THE GENERAL climbs out of his tomb, puffing out his chest. He walks
with military precision).
THE GENERAL
Attention!
At ease! You can smell the gunpowder in the air! An excellent night to
commemorate the heroes of the motherland! I, who fought against the French
troops and...
DON PANCHO
Oh, here
he goes. Listen, General, what hero? Word on the street is you were licking
Emperor Maximilian's boots. You're a traitor!
THE GENERAL
Slander!
I am a decorated military man! Look at my medals, look at my stripes!
(The General makes a sharp, brusque gesture to point at his chest. His
entire arm detaches from the shoulder and the humerus falls to the ground with
a dry clack).
THE GENERAL
(Looking
at his arm on the ground). Eh… war
wounds. Occupational hazard. Evaristo, do me a favor, hand me my arm, I can't
bend over.
EVARISTO
(Disgusted). Oh, no, General. Pick up your own remains, Cástulo and I are wearing
formal attire.
(NICO and NINA, the ghost children, run in).
NICO
Careful,
Nina, the General is falling apart!
NINA
I bet a
cannonball hit him in the Pastry War! Just like us, when a bakery crushed us!
(THE GIGGLER emerges from a modest dirt grave. He is a yellowish
skeleton. As soon as he sees the arm on the ground, he lets out a thunderous
laugh).
THE GIGGLER
Hahahahaha!
His arm fell off! Hahahaha! Sorry, I died from a burst gallbladder and it left
me with this tic where I laugh at everything! Hahahaha!
(Whispers and the crunching of dry leaves are heard. The skeletons
quickly hide behind the tombstones, only their skulls peeking out. A LIVING
COUPLE enters. They carry a bottle of anise liquor and a sweet,
suspicious-smelling cigarette).
LIVING BOY
Here,
babe. No one can see us here. Behind this big mausoleum.
LIVING GIRL
Aren't
you scared? Ugh, it smells like old people... Anyway, pass the anise. And light
up that joint so we can relax.
(They sit leaning right against Don Pancho's tomb. They drink from the
bottle, smoke, and start making out passionately with exaggerated noises).
THE CHATTERBOX
(Whispering
incredibly fast). Look at
them, look at them! They're drinking anise and smoking the devil's lettuce!
What an outrage, and right on Don Pancho's grave!
DON PANCHO
(Highly
indignant, whispering).
Fornicating on my property! I'm gonna pull their legs right now!
CÁSTULO
Jesus,
Mary, and Joseph! Such lack of decency. In our time, canoodling was done behind
closed doors.
EVARISTO
But just
look at the youth, my dear... so flexible. I couldn't reach that angle even
when I was alive.
(The beam of a flashlight enters. It's DON CHENTE, the night watchman).
DON CHENTE
Hey,
hey, you little devils! This is holy ground, not a cheap motel! Take your junk
out to the street!
(The couple screams in terror and runs away, dropping the bottle of
anise. Don Chente takes a quick swig from the bottle, coughs, and keeps
walking, muttering to himself).
DON CHENTE
Damn
rats and spiders. I'm quitting tomorrow, I swear I am.
3. Britany's Arrival and the Bad News
(BRITANY walks down the center aisle. She wears a fine designer dress, a
devil horn headband, and only has one arm. On the left side, her sleeve hangs
empty).
BRITANY
Hello,
illustrious neighbors. What a divine night. The weather is ideal for preserving
calcium.
EVARISTO
Miss
Britany. What an honor. Daughter of the wealthiest dynasty. But... forgive the
indiscretion, what happened to your left extremity?
BRITANY
Oh,
Evaristo, don't even remind me. I lost the little arm at a New Year's party
trying to light a bootleg firework. Literally, it flew off. But anyway, my
family sent me here because they say this graveyard has a lot of vintage
prestige.
NINA
Look,
Nico, a graveyard with prestige!
BRITANY
Guys,
I'm super touched right now. They're celebrating Halloween outside, it's so
cool. Some little dogs walked by... dressed as little ghosts! They put white
sheets with two eye holes on them. I cried, it was so cute!
DON PANCHO
Hallow-ween?
Dogs in sheets? Today is the Day of the Dead! What a lack of respect!
BRITANY
Oh, Don
Pancho, relax. Besides, I'm here to spill some terrible tea. The engineers
outside were talking. Hold onto your femurs. This graveyard... is going to
disappear.
EVERYONE
WHAT?!
BRITANY
They're
going to demolish everything and build a mega mall. A luxury shopping center,
with an ice rink, 4D cinemas, and those super expensive donuts.
THE GENERAL
What?!
This is an act of war! We will defend the graveyard with our lives!... well,
with our deaths!
DON PANCHO
Damn
shopping malls! Why don't they build them in the Zócalo square, there's plenty
of space there! All that damn concrete just sitting there for nothing!
EVARISTO
Cástulo,
imagine us, wandering through the food court. How inelegant! Ending up smelling
like burgers and fries.
THE GIGGLER
Hahahahaha!
A mall! We're gonna end up as mannequins in the store windows! Hahahaha!
THE CHATTERBOX
I knew
it! I told you so! I saw guys in hardhats measuring the entrance the other day,
but nobody listens to me, everybody calls me crazy, and look at us now, we're
gonna get thrown out on the street coffin and all…
LORENZO
My
bones! I don't want to be gravel for the underground parking lot!
4. The Heavenly Message and the Great Journey
(Suddenly, lightning illuminates the sky. DON CHENTE enters, but he
walks differently. He looks luminous, clutching his chest in pain).
DON CHENTE
Oh,
boy... that was a sharp squeeze in my chest. Hey... I can see you guys crystal
clear. You're not lumps or shadows anymore. You've got skull faces!
LORENZO
Don
Chente... you can see us? You hear us?
DON CHENTE
Loud and
clear. Boys... I think I just kicked the bucket. The Grim Reaper finally caught
me.
NICO AND NINA
Welcome,
Don Chente!
DON CHENTE
Thanks,
kids. And don't be scared, I come with fresh news from upstairs. (He points to the sky). Since they're gonna build their damn shopping mall
here, St. Peter sent down an eviction memo.
DON PANCHO
They're
going to throw us in a ravine! I knew it!
DON CHENTE
No!
Upstairs they took pity. Due to third-party damages, almost all of us are
granted... Direct transfer to Heaven! We're going to Paradise!
EVERYONE
YES!
HALLELUJAH! HURRAY!
DON CHENTE
(Checking
a little notebook). Mind
you, it says here there are exceptions. We're all going... except The Giggler,
because the cherubs say he makes too much noise and won't let them practice
their harps.
THE GIGGLER
(Very
serious for the first time). I... I
have to stay here in the mall's foundation? But I'm not gonna laugh anymore...
I swear.
DON CHENTE
And The
Chatterbox isn't going either. The saints say you talk so much you distract the
souls from their eternal reflections.
THE CHATTERBOX
But I'm
super quiet! I only comment on the absolute necessities! Don't leave me!
(The graveyard plunges into deep sadness. Britany approaches Don Chente,
determined).
BRITANY
Listen,
Chente, zero cool. Either we all go to the heavenly party, or nobody goes.
We're the Graveyard family.
CÁSTULO
That's
right. If there's one thing we've learned from putting up with each other for a
century, it's that eternity is better spent with friends.
DON PANCHO
Yes,
sir. Even with these annoying ones. Talk to the boss, Chente. All for one, one
for all.
DON CHENTE
Alright,
hold on. (Don
Chente closes his eyes. A magic cell phone notification "ping" is
heard from the heavens). Oh,
wow. I just got a system update in my mind. It says: "By popular demand
and the spirit of the Day of the Dead... General amnesty. Approved".
THE GIGGLER
Hahahahaha!
We're going to heaven! Hahahaha!
THE CHATTERBOX
We did
it! I knew the Big Guy had a good heart, I always said they would listen to us
upstairs and that...!
DON CHENTE
Let's
go, boys, before they change their minds! We're leaving this ungrateful world.
Everyone! Everyone except the rats and the spiders! And... and me.
LORENZO
What do
you mean 'and you', Don Chente?
DON CHENTE
Well
yeah, why would I stay behind guarding rubble? I'm going with you guys too, of
course! I'm coming with you, boys!
(Festive, heavenly Mexican music starts playing at full volume. The
graveyard lights up with bright, magical colors full of life. Evaristo and
Cástulo dance elegantly. The General moves his loose arm to the rhythm of the
music. Britany jumps with Nico and Nina. Lorenzo and Don Pancho hug each other
jumping, and Don Chente starts dancing in the center, dropping his old
flashlight. They all rise toward the back of the stage looking at a warm, white
light descending upon them).
[CURTAIN / FADE TO BLACK]
SUGGESTED NOTES FOR STAGING
1.
THE
MYSTERIOUS BONE: The hip
bone should be large, comical, and exaggerated. The gag works best if the prop
is white plastic, contrasting with the dusty realism of the graveyard.
2.
BRITANY: The actress must hide her left arm inside her
costume (suggesting the loss from the "firework"). Her attitude,
although "snobby/valley girl", is not unpleasant, but enthusiastic
and innocent in the face of misfortune.
3.
THE
GENERAL'S HUMERUS: The
General's sleeve must be attached with velcro at the shoulder, allowing a prop
arm to fall loudly to the floor during his martial gesture.
4.
SOUND
EFFECTS: The rat
squeaks at the beginning set the tone of abandonment. Don Chente's
"heavenly ping" should be a modern sound (like a cell phone),
breaking the tension of the climax with comedy.
