The Great Scandal of the Breeches Reales (or Pingolin's Rebellion) is a
one-act satirical farce designed for physical, student, or community theater,
with an approximate duration of 15 to 20 minutes and a highly flexible cast.
The play draws directly from the slapstick, absurdity and dynamism of commedia
dell'arte, where the young inventor Pingolín (in a satirical tone that has a
social struggle as its background) assumes the role of the conscientious
citizen who discovers an uncomfortable truth about "public health"
and decides to fight alone against the structural corruption of local clans and
the abuse of economic power. For directors and producers, the text offers an
ideal canvas to explore comic rhythm, percussion with everyday objects (frying
pans and pots) and body exaggeration, requiring low-cost props but with great
visual impact.
CHARACTERS:
- PINGOLÍN: A young, quirky
inventor of useless gadgets. Wears a spring-loaded top hat. Rogueish, sharp-witted, and independent.
- PÁNFILO
CHEEKYBROTHER: The oldest brother. Wears a borrowed
velvet coat, flashes a blinding 38-tooth smile, and speaks like a snobbish
opera singer with a cold.
- PRUDENCIO
CHEEKYBROTHER: The younger brother. Echoes Pánfilo’s
words like a dimwitted shadow while operating a giant, ridiculous abacus
to count money.
- LADY VIPER: Matriarch of the
Wicked Clan. Wears a towering hair comb with a secret compartment for
chocolates. Uses a
spring-loaded fan as a weapon.
- LADY TARANTULA: Second-in-command.
Horrible eyesight, wire glasses, constantly confuses random objects with
food.
- LADY MAGGOT: The ancient one.
Hard of hearing, misunderstands everything, and uses a giant tin
ear-trumpet as a club.
- CHISPITA: Leader of
"The Clan-Less" rebels. Expert at banging pressure cookers and
speaking hard truths.
- CASCABEL: The noisy
strategist. Wears a belt full of pot lids like armor.
SCENE
ONE: The Sticky Mystery
(The
Main Square of Never-Ever-Go-Back Land. A country where streets go uphill both
ways, trees grow sweet meringues on Thursdays, and citizens walk taking one
step forward and half a step sideways. In the background, a massive clothesline
stretches from balcony to balcony, filled with royal lace bloomers, striped
boxers, and oversized socks. Center stage: a statue of the Cross-Eyed King
holding a scepter that looks suspiciously like a toilet plunger. Enter
PINGOLÍN, doing the ridiculous regional walk. He carries a bubbling bucket of
tapioca glue and a roll of giant posters.)
PINGOLÍN:
(To the audience, loud whisper.) Shhh! Don't even blink too loud! The
walls in this town have ears... and those ears have corns! (He dips a huge
brush into the glue; as he pulls it out, it sticks to his nose. He pulls hard.)
Ouch! This tapioca glue is stronger than superglue and bad habits combined. (He
slaps a poster onto the King's statue. The poster slides down and sticks right
onto Pingolín’s face. Blinded, he stumbles and trips over the fountain.) Boom!
Posters up, truth out! Let’s see the look on the Cheekybrothers' faces when the
whole kingdom reads my exposé. "Saviors of public hygiene," my foot!
They're nothing but white-collar crooks!
(Whimsical,
cheap-sounding heavenly chimes play. Enter PÁNFILO and PRUDENCIO CHEEKYBROTHER,
bowing extravagantly to empty balconies. Marching right behind them like drill
sergeants are LADY VIPER, LADY TARANTULA, and LADY MAGGOT, fanning themselves
at lightning speed.)
PÁNFILO
CHEEKYBROTHER:
(In a melodious, stuffy voice, adjusting his velvet cuffs.) What a
glorious morning to be saintly, Brother Prudencio! I feel so much charity in my
chest it’s practically choking me. Thanks to our selfless underwear rescue
campaign, the kingdom is spotless!
PRUDENCIO
CHEEKYBROTHER:
(Shaking his giant abacus.) Spotless, odorless, and fully invoiced,
Brother Pánfilo! And because we are so big-hearted, we only charge three bags
of gold coins for every dozen undergarments we save from the dark, mysterious,
and terrifying "Black Stain Epidemic." Ah, what a lucrative
healthcare crisis!
LADY
VIPER:
(Snapping her fan shut.) Praise the Cheekybrothers' soap! (Whispering
to Pánfilo with a heavy wink.) Tell me, dear Pánfilo... has the chocolate
tree bloomed yet? Because my applause doesn't run on empty.
PÁNFILO
CHEEKYBROTHER:
(Looking around sneakily, pulls a velvet pouch from his coat and hands out
gold-wrapped bonbons.) Only the finest 24-karat treats for my loyal ladies.
High-society hazelnut.
LADY
VIPER:
(Sniffing the chocolate greedily.) Oh, smells like pure holiness! For a
treat like this, I’d swear under oath that donkeys can fly and that the King's
eyes look straight ahead.
LADY
MAGGOT:
(Shouting into her giant tin ear-trumpet aimed at Pánfilo's face.) What's
that? The laundry is flying? Quick, catch the underpants before they bite!
LADY
TARANTULA:
(Approaching the statue. She bites the poster, thinking it's a giant wafer.)
Hey! This wall-pastry is very dry... And it has typos! (Adjusts her wire
glasses upside down.) Good heavens! My eyes are witnessing treason! Look
what that brat Pingolín pasted here!
LADY
VIPER:
(Reading over her shoulder.) Let me see! "The Cheekybrothers are
shameless scammers: their charity business is a total fraud that smells like
stinky feet." Holy Mother of Starched Shirts!
PRUDENCIO
CHEEKYBROTHER:
(Turning green, blue, and pale yellow; his abacus beads clack as he
trembles.) Defamation! Slander! An attack on the free market of briefs!
Wicked Clan, defend your chocolates! Get him!
(LADY
VIPER and LADY TARANTULA slap the springs on their fans. They start spinning
like old helicopter rotors. They charge at PINGOLÍN, who tries to run, but his
shoes are stuck to the floor by the tapioca glue.)
LADY
VIPER:
Take that, laundry rebel! (Dumps a handful of itching powder down the back
of his shirt.) That’s for defacing public property with unauthorized
truths!
LADY
TARANTULA:
(Confusing Pingolín's nose with a doorknob.) Twist the handle! (Ties
his shoelaces together in a messy knot and paints a thick tar mustache on his
forehead.) Learn to respect the philanthropists who fund our retirement!
Boo, enemy of textile progress!
LADY
MAGGOT:
(Arriving late, smacking Pingolín's hat with her tin ear-trumpet.) Take
that, you un-starched sock! Who wants chamomile tea?
PINGOLÍN:
(Hopping like a glitching kangaroo, scratching his back frantically against
the statue.) Ow, ow, ow! I itch from my eyelashes down to my family tree!
You chocolate-bought mummies! You can make me do the flea-dance, but the truth
is stuck with dragon-tail glue! You couldn't blow it off with dynamite! The
town will know exactly what your fortune smells like!
(The
Cheekybrothers and the old ladies run off indignantly, plugging their ears,
while Pingolín falls backward, landing bottom-first right into his own glue
bucket.)
SCENE
TWO: The Midnight Stench
(Nighttime
in the square. Pingolín's posters glow with a radioactive green light because
he laced the glue with mutant firefly dust. PINGOLÍN sits on the edge of the
fountain, the bucket still stuck to his rear, scratching his ear with a
three-foot-long wooden spoon. Enter CHISPITA, CASCABEL, and the Clan-Less
rebels in a ridiculous guerrilla formation, crouching low and banging muffled
pots and pans.)
CHISPITA:
(Signaling a halt with a soup ladle.) Earth to Pingolín! We read your
glowing signs. Great spelling, even better truths. We don't belong to the
Wicked Clan, and we don't stuff our teeth with bribe chocolates. We are sick
and tired of our Sunday boxers mysteriously waking up covered in mud every
single Tuesday!
CASCABEL:
Exactly! My great-aunt tried to wash her petticoats in the river, and those
crazy hags from the Wicked Clan chased her away with regulation bricks! They
claim the river water is their corporate monopoly. Something smells fishy, and
it’s not the river!
PINGOLÍN:
(Using a giant funnel as a megaphone, making his voice sound like a broken
siren.) Shhh! Quiet, you noisy rebels! It’s not fishy... it’s downright
rotten! Hide your pans and get behind those meringue barrels. Here come the
saints of the scam!
(Everyone
ducks behind the barrels. Enter PÁNFILO and PRUDENCIO CHEEKYBROTHER on tiptoes,
like terrible ballet dancers. They carry a massive, smoking black cauldron
between them. A foul neon-green vapor distorts the stage lights. Behind them,
in a single file, come the three Wicked Clan ladies, wearing clothespins on
their noses and carrying burlap sacks.)
PÁNFILO
CHEEKYBROTHER:
(Laughing a villainous laugh that dissolves into a coughing fit.) Ha,
ha, ha! What a beautiful monopoly, Brother Prudencio. While the idiots of this
town are fast asleep, we come out to bless their clotheslines. Bring out the
swamp-mud sprayer!
PRUDENCIO
CHEEKYBROTHER:
(Pulling out a tuxedo-styled pump sprayer.) Sprayer ready, Brother
Pánfilo! A splash of mud here, a smear of sludge there... and tomorrow morning,
we declare Phase Four of the Underwear Emergency! Three gold coins per
sanitized brief. We are geniuses of public health.
LADY
VIPER:
(Speaking with a nasal, muffled voice due to the clothespin.) Listen,
Mr. Cheekybrother, the clan appreciates the chocolates, but tonight's recipe
for the socks is melting my fingernail polish. What on earth did you put in
that cauldron?
PÁNFILO
CHEEKYBROTHER:
(Puffing his chest out.) Ah, the haute cuisine of crime! Since the
public was getting used to regular old mud, we innovated. Tonight, we are
soaking the kingdom's socks in a concentrated broth of widowed-toad wart pus
mixed with the vomit of an ill-mannered cat that ate rancid sardines! Tomorrow,
those socks will walk by themselves, and we’ll charge a runaway-garment capture
tax!
(PÁNFILO
lifts the lid with a dramatic flourish. Sound effect: a chorus of frogs tuning
instruments followed by a massive collective "EWWWW!". A sickening
yellow light floods the stage. At that exact microsecond, PINGOLÍN hits a
button on his hat; the spring triggers, shooting his top hat straight into the
cauldron lid, ringing it like a church gong. THE CLAN-LESS jump out from behind
the barrels, blasting heavy flashlights right into the villains' faces.)
PINGOLÍN:
FREEZE IN THE NAME OF HYGIENE, YOU MIDNIGHT UNDERWEAR SOILERS!!
CHISPITA:
(Banging her pressure cooker with a whisk.) Caught red-handed and
foul-smelling!
CASCABEL:
(Blowing a referee whistle.) Wake up, Never-Ever-Go-Back Land! Pop your
heads out or your laundry gets it!
(A
dozen prop windows snap open in the background. Townspeople pop their heads out
wearing striped nightcaps, oversized nightgowns, and giant hair rollers.)
PINGOLÍN:
(Climbing the statue, face-to-face with the bronze King.) Behold,
citizens! Look at your great benefactors! The Cheekybrothers, the saints of
soap, are the very same crooks who muddy your drawers at midnight and poison
your socks with toad pus so the Wicked Clan can drain your pockets at dawn! And
all for chocolates that contain more poison than cocoa!
PRUDENCIO
CHEEKYBROTHER:
(Trembling so hard his pants fall down, revealing long yellow underwear
covered in red hearts.) Lies! It’s a smear campaign by rival laundromats!
This isn't cat vomit, it's... it's French cologne with bold, rustic feline
notes!
CHISPITA:
(Holding the cauldron with a rag and waving it under the townspeople's
windows.) Come on, neighbors, smell the French cologne! Enjoy the scent of
high society!
VOICES FROM THE WINDOWS:
- Eww! That smells
like a demon after a garlic festival!
- My Belgian lace bloomers!
- Thieves! Throw
them in the tub without bubbles!
- Give us our gold
back!
SCENE
THREE: The Toothbrush Verdict
(The
townspeople march down from their houses armed with feather dusters, brooms,
and rolling pins. They encircle the five villains. LADY VIPER and LADY
TARANTULA try to hide the bags of sweets, but LADY TARANTULA, panicking,
swallows three bonbons whole, wrappers included. Her jaw gets glued shut, and
she starts making angry seal noises: "Mmmph! Mmmph!")
PINGOLÍN:
(Ringing a cowbell for order.) Silence in the court of dirty laundry! As
the official whistleblower of the Great Underpants Extortion, and backed by the
noisy union of the Clan-Less, I declare immediate sentencing to save the noses
of our fatherland!
PÁNFILO
CHEEKYBROTHER:
(On his knees, crying fake theatrical tears.) Mercy, Pingolín! Have
mercy on our velvet coats! We have sensitive skin and are medically allergic to
manual labor!
PINGOLÍN:
You have two choices, scammers! Option A is the Ultimate Bad Punishment of the
Realm: living for three years inside a giant wool sock from a mangy sheep,
soaked in your own toad-pus recipe, while a choir of twelve mountain goats
licks the soles of your feet to the rhythm of a Viennese waltz!
THE
VILLAINS:
(Screaming together, kneeling in a circle.) Nooooo! Not the musical
goats! Mercy!
PINGOLÍN:
Then Option B it is! Starting right this second, and for the next fifty
years—including leap years—the Cheekybrothers and the lovely ladies of the
Wicked Clan will wash, scrub, rinse, starch, and iron every single pair of
underpants, sock, snotty handkerchief, and compression girdle in this kingdom.
And you will do it for free! And do you know what your tools will be? (Pulls
five tiny toothbrushes from his pocket.) Your own hard-bristled
toothbrushes!
LADY
VIPER:
(Handing over the bags of gold with teary eyes.) Bring out the
toothbrushes! Bring out the bleach! Just keep those goats away from my bunions!
(CHISPITA
and CASCABEL, moving like synchronized drill sergeants, tie aprons made from
Pingolín's posters around the villains. They slide five massive wooden
wash-tubs in front of them. The villains drop to their knees and begin
scrubbing steaming socks at a frantic pace, creating a percussive rhythm with
their toothbrushes: Scrubba-scrubba-chee, scrubba-scrubba-cha.)
PINGOLÍN:
(Sitting on his improvised fountain throne, unwrapping a gold bonbon that
actually was real chocolate.) Scrub with passion, my dear Cheekybrothers!
That argyle sock still smells like a criminal cat! And let this be a lesson for
the rest of your miserable lives... (To the audience, pointing with his
chocolate.) Because he who muddies another man's drawers for a silver
dime... ends up washing underpants for free for the rest of his time!
(A
storm of gold confetti and stage-soap bubbles explodes from the rafters. The
Clan-Less play a triumphant march on their pots and pans. The villains sneeze
giant soap bubbles through their noses as the...)
